Guide des subventions à l’achat d’une voiture électrique en 2024-2025
2024-11-06
In Quebec, electric cars are more affordable than anywhere else in Canada, thanks to both federal and provincial government subsidies. Despite an announced reduction in the amounts offered by the Roulez Vert program earlier this year, the incentives for buying an electric vehicle in 2024-2025 are still very attractive.
At BEQ Technology, we like to make your life easier. So we’ve put together a little guide listing all the subsidies available in 2024 and 2025 for the purchase of an electric car and a charging station.
FEDERAL SUBSIDY: THE IVZE PROGRAM
Already in effect for some time, this federal grant underwent a small modification at the beginning of October 2024, reducing its eligibility. From now on, to qualify for this grant, the vehicle on which you wish to obtain the subsidy must meet new conditions.
As of October 1, 2024, to be eligible, the zero-emission vehicle must meet one of the following conditions:
– It must have been manufactured in Canada;
– Be manufactured in a country with which Canada has a free trade agreement;
– The vehicle in question was already on Canadian soil or in transit to Canada before October 1, 2024.
Zero emission vehicles fall into 3 categories:
– Battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs)
– Plug-in hybrids (PHEV)
– Hydrogen-powered vehicles
If you purchase or lease (over 12 months) a vehicle that meets the program’s criteria, you can receive a grant of up to $5,000.
To qualify for the federal grant, the vehicle must have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of less than $55,000. Options must total a maximum of $10,000, for a total invoice of $65,000. For seven-seat vehicles, such as a pickup truck, SUV or minivan, the maximum vehicle value must not exceed $60,000. If you opt for a more expensive version of this type of vehicle, the total price must not exceed $70,000.
Make sure you meet all the criteria to avoid unpleasant surprises!
PROVINCIAL SUBSIDY: THE ROULEZ VERT PROGRAM
The Roulez Vert program, in force since 20 12, is a subsidy that should be seized as soon as possible. A few months ago, when the provincial budget was tabled, the government reminded everyone of the eventual end of the program, and unveiled a gradual reduction in the amounts offered. Currently, from October 2024 to the end of December 2024, an amount of $7,000 is available.
Starting in January 2025, the amount offered for an electric vehicle drops to $4,000, and is halved again in January 2026, ending completely in January 2027. The same applies to the amounts offered for plug-in hybrids, used EVs and all electric motorcycles. On a positive note: until then, the subsidy offered by this program for charging stations will remain, and the amount will remain the same! You’ll receive a $600 subsidy, whether you buy your charging station tomorrow morning or in January 2027!
The procedure for obtaining the rebate is very simple: the $7,000 discount is applied instantly at the dealership and deducted from the after-tax price. Those who choose a plug-in hybrid model are also entitled to a maximum subsidy of $5,000.
*Amounts as of October 2024.
For those opting for a lease, the $7,000 rebate also applies, provided the lease is for 48 months or more. Otherwise, if the lease is for 12-23 months, it will be 25% of the total rebate, 50% of the rebate for a 24-35 month lease, and 75% of the rebate for a 36-47 month lease.
Those who opt for a used model rather than a new one are entitled to a $3500 rebate, provided they have never received a new vehicle rebate under the Roulez Vert program, and provided the vehicle is less than three or four years old. Therefore, if the vehicle received the rebate when it was purchased new, it cannot receive the used electric vehicle rebate again.
*Amounts as of October 2024.
Combining the federal iVZE program and the provincial Roulez Vert program, we get a total of up to $12,000 in subsidies for the purchase of an electric car! Of course, this amount will be lower from 2025 onwards, due to the aforementioned reductions.
IN SUMMARY FOR 2024 :
– iVZE program: $5,000
– Roulez Vert program for a new EV: $7,000
– Roulez Vert program for an OHV: $5,000
– Roulez Vert program for a used EV: $3,500
Subsidies in 2024 and 2025 for the purchase and installation of a charging station
Electric cars and home charging stations go hand in hand. What makes it all so interesting is that a number of subsidies are available for the purchase and installation of a charging station, enabling you to cover part of the cost.
As we mentioned earlier, the provincial government’s Roulez Vert program offers a generous $600 subsidy for the purchase of a Level 2 home charging station. Proof of purchase is required, as reimbursement is made upon submission of the purchase invoice. For buildings with more than 3 units built before 2018, the subsidy will be 50% of the cost, as the equipment will be more expensive.
In 2024, nearly 20 Quebec municipalities are offering subsidies to their residents for the purchase and installation of a charging station. Most subsidies cover 25% of installation costs. Others offer a fixed amount of $100 to $150 for the purchase of a charging station and $250 for its installation. To find out if your municipality offers such a program, consult the list here!
*Please note that the list may vary and is subject to change without notice. Please check your municipality’s website to make sure a subsidy is still available.
IN A NUTSHELL :
– Roulez Vert program for the purchase of a charging station: $600
– Roulez Vert program for apartment buildings: 50% of purchase and installation costs
– Municipal programs for the purchase and installation of a residential charging station: vary according to the municipality’s discretion.
