Guide to electric car subsidies in 2022-2023

subventions voiture électrique 2022 2023

In Quebec, electric cars are more affordable than anywhere else in Canada! That’s because of government subsidies at both federal and provincial levels. Although Quebec’s Roulez vert program was revised downward earlier this year, subsidies for the purchase of an electric car in 2022 remain highly advantageous. With the goal of moving to all-electric vehicle sales by 2035, you might as well take advantage now while these programs are still in effect!

Subsidies in 2022 and 2023 for the purchase of an electric car

To simplify your life and provide you with all the information you need in one place, the BEQ Technology team has put together this guide listing all the subsidies available in 2022 and 2023 for the purchase of an electric car and charging station.

FEDERAL SUBSIDY: THE IVZE PROGRAM

All Canadians are entitled to a $5,000 subsidy on the purchase or lease of a new electric vehicle. If the model in question has a battery of less than 15 kWh, the subsidy is limited to $2,500. However, all new all-electric vehicles currently on sale have batteries larger than this, including some plug-in hybrid models.

To qualify for the federal subsidy, the vehicle must have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of less than $45,000. Options must not exceed $10,000, for a total invoice of $55,000. For seven-passenger vehicles, the maximum amount to be met rises to $55,000, with a maximum of $5,000 in options.

PROVINCIAL SUBSIDY: THE ROULEZ VERT PROGRAM

Last March, the Quebec government tabled its 2022-2023 budget, announcing that its Roulez vert program would be renewed until March 2027. However, the amount of the subsidy for the purchase of an electric car has been reduced from $8,000 to $7,000. The procedure for obtaining the rebate is very simple: the $7000 discount is applied instantly at the dealership during the transaction, and is deducted from the after-tax price. Those who choose a plug-in hybrid model are also entitled to a maximum subsidy of $5,000.

For those who opt to lease, the $7,000 discount also applies, provided the lease is for 48 months or more. Otherwise, if the lease is for 12-23 months, it will be 25% of the total rebate, 50% of the rebate for a 24-35 month lease, and 75% of the rebate for a 36-47 month lease.

Those who opt for a used model rather than a new one are entitled to a $3500 rebate, provided they have never received a new vehicle rebate under the Roulez vert program, and provided the vehicle is less than three or four years old. So if the vehicle received the rebate when it was purchased new, it cannot receive the used electric vehicle rebate again.

Combining the federal iVZE program and the provincial Roulez vert program, we get a total of $12,000 in subsidies for the purchase of an electric car!

IN SUMMARY :

  • iVZE program: $5,000
  • Go Green program for a new EV: $7,000
  • Go Green program for an OHV: $5,000
  • Go Green program for a used EV: $3,500

Subsidies in 2022 and 2023 for the purchase and installation of a charging station

Electric cars also mean Level 2 charging stations! The good news is that a number of programs are also available to cover a good part of the cost of purchasing and installing a charging station.

Again through its Roulez vert program, the Quebec government offers a generous $600 subsidy for the purchase of a Level 2 residential charging station. Proof of purchase is required, as reimbursement is made upon submission of the purchase invoice. For buildings with more than 5 units, the subsidy will be 50% of the cost, as the equipment will be more expensive.

In 2022, 26 Quebec municipalities are offering subsidies to their residents for the purchase and installation of a charging station. Most subsidies cover 25% of installation costs. Others offer a fixed amount of $100 for the purchase of a charging station and $250 for its installation. To find out if your municipality offers such a program, consult the list here!

IN SUMMARY :

  • Roulez vert program for the purchase of a charging station: $600
  • Go Green program for apartment buildings: 50% of purchase and installation costs
  • Municipal programs for the purchase and installation of a residential charging station: $350 or 25% of purchase and installation costs
