The 14 Best Electric Vehicles According to Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports recently published a list of the best electric vehicles on the market. The non-profit organization buys its models for testing and is a reference in the industry. Numerous publications often cite its findings, so we’re interested in its latest ranking of the best electric vehicles.

To evaluate models, the group analyzes a host of parameters, from build quality to driving experience, performance, and reliability, as reported by owners. In the case of electric models, they also looked at factors such as differences between advertised and actual range and recharging characteristics, for example.

In the end, each model receives a score out of 100 points.

Here, then, are the 14 vehicles that Consumer Reports has named the best electric vehicles on the market.

We’ll go by category, not by highest score. Note that all models evaluated are 2024 model year.

Generic electric cars

1 – Hyundai Ioniq 6 (83%)

This model was appreciated for its committed driving, lively acceleration, generous range and fast recharging power.

2 – Kia Niro EV (71%)

Although classified as an SUV here, the Kia Niro won over the members of Consumer Reports. It was honoured for its solid ride, generous range and fast-charging power, among other things.

Electric cars from luxury brands

3 – BMW i4 (83%)

This BMW i4 has many qualities, including impeccable build quality, fun-to-drive, range, and power. Consumer Reports was well aware of them.

4 – Porsche Taycan (76%)

Porsche’s Taycan also deserved a mention because of its 270 kW charging speed, solid ride, and performance levels. And the model is being improved for 2025.

Two-row SUV

5 – Kia EV6 (77%)

Kia’s first electric model, built on an all-electrification platform, has impressed Consumer Report’s judges with its styling, driving dynamics, and recharging capacity, reaching 235 kW in their tests.

6 – Tesla Model Y (72%)

Tesla’s Model Y, the world’s best-selling vehicle in 2023, impressed with its agility, range of over 500 km, and access to Tesla’s charging network. This is one of the apparent advantages of this model.

7 – Nissan Ariya (70%)

Here’s one that’s all too often overlooked. Nissan’s Ariya offers good value for money, an interesting range, two battery choices and a spacious interior, among the qualities pointed out by Consumer Reports.

8 – Ford Mustang Mach-E (70%)

Despite its initial reliability problems, the Ford Mustang Mach-E continues to be popular with enthusiasts. Consumer Report found it practical and appreciated its many configurations, range, and agile road manners, which makes it a pleasure to drive.

Three-row SUV

9 – Kia EV9 (78%)

Here’s one that has impressed everyone since its arrival in December last year. In addition to its eye-catching design, it’s the fact that it’s the first three-row electric SUV offered by a generic manufacturer that makes it attractive. Its smooth ride and range were also praised.

Luxury SUVs

10 – BMW iX (84%)

This model’s impeccable finish, range, performance level, quiet cabin and 195 kW charging speed make it highly competitive and attractive on the market, again according to Consumer Reports.

11 – Genesis GV60 (75%)

According to the organization, the GV60 is one of the most attractive electric vehicles, thanks to its rapid acceleration, comfort level, road-holding and stylish interior. Its recharging speed was also praised.

12 – Lexus RZ (74%)

This vehicle has often been criticized for its shorter range and the fact that it drops significantly when the air conditioning is activated. Consumer Reports nevertheless liked its all-around qualities, including its rich interior, all-wheel drive, vigorous acceleration and soundproofing.

13 – Audi Q4 e-tron (71%)

The luxury version of the Volkswagen ID.4 also caught the attention of Consumer Reports evaluators. With its smooth ride, build quality, and driving pleasure, the Q4 e-tron was found to be user-friendly.

14 – Audi Q8 e-tron (70%)

Finally, the Q8 e-tron, the evolution of Audi’s five-year-old e-tron SUV, also made a big impression. Its smooth ride, princely silence, impressive handling and other general qualities (equipment, performance, range and recharging speed) earned it a place on Consumer Reports’ list of best electric vehicle buys.

Consumer Reports’ ranking highlights the diversity and quality of electric vehicles available on the market in 2024. From generic models to luxury brands, each vehicle offers unique strengths in terms of performance, range, and driving comfort. However, a crucial factor for maximizing the electric vehicle experience remains the charging infrastructure.
