Top 10 foreign electric vehicles
2025-02-24

Interest in foreign vehicles is growing. Over the past few weeks, we’ve noticed that many people no longer want to buy products and vehicles from the USA. First there was the uncertainty surrounding Donald Trump’s tariffs, which could be imposed on Canadian products as of March. Then there was the U.S. threat to impose a 100% tariff on vehicles built in Canada and shipped to the United States.
We mentioned this in our gallery on non-American models sold in Canada, but we must remain cautious when shopping for options. Indeed, it can happen that a foreign product has more American parts than a model that is… American.
It’s important to do your research in this area. Nevertheless, because you’re interested, here’s a gallery of 10 foreign electric vehicle models. These aren’t American models, but they’re interesting and available in Canada.
The models are presented in no particular order.
1 – Nissan Ariya
The Nissan Ariya is one of the industry’s hidden gems. Nissan’s SUV offers a unique and singular design, a unique and chic interior, and a driving experience that amazes many. And with a range of almost 350 km, it’s not extraordinary, but it’s not bad either. It’s a model worth discovering.
2 – Kia EV9
Since its market debut at the end of 2023 as a 2024 model, the Kia EV9 has made a name for itself with families looking for a space-saving electric solution. With three rows and an impressive load volume of up to 2314 litres, it’s easy to see why. As for range, it’s, at best, around 480 kilometres with the Wind variant.
3 – Mini Countryman SE
Mini will offer two electric models to Canadian consumers, including the Countryman EV, a product worth discovering. You need to know that the new generation of this model (gasoline) is more spacious, enabling it to compete with other sub-compact SUVs in the industry. This electric version takes advantage of all that with an airy, well-crafted layout, not to mention that its driving dynamics are typical Mini pleasure.
The range is 341 kilometres, which is acceptable considering that we’re mainly dealing with an urban SUV.
4 – BMW i4
The offer is slimmer but still quite interesting if you are interested in a car. Of the lot, the BMW i4 stands out because it offers everything we love about BMW: inspired driving. Contrary to what you might think, the base price of this model is quite attractive, considering what you get. The i4’s range is 428 kilometres, another reason to rejoice.
5 – Genesis GV60
Let’s stay in the world of luxury vehicles for a moment with the Genesis GV60, the first of two electric SUVs offered by Hyundai’s premium brand. If you like more compact, maneuverable models, you’re in for a treat with this one, which delivers both sporty driving and power to spare. It can cover 399 kilometres on a full charge.
6 – Hyundai Kona EV
On a more affordable note, but with a similar format, the Hyundai Kona remains a relevant choice. While its format remains modest, its layout makes it spacious and versatile. And with a range of 420 kilometres, it has little to envy its rivals, especially as its price remains reasonable.
7 – Hyundai Ioniq 5
Also from Hyundai, the Ioniq 5 is a little roomier than the Kona, but also more futuristic, with its singular design. With a range of up to 520 kilometres, this SUV remains popular with buyers. The good news is that, after a time when you had to wait to get your hands on a model, dealers have them in stock now, giving you extra buying power.
8 – Toyota bZ4X
The bZ4X isn’t the most successful electric vehicle in terms of technology, range, fuel efficiency, etc. Even its design is controversial. Yet, many people like it, and those who do love it. It’s up to you to decide. The range is 406 km.
9 – Volvo EX30
The Volvo EX30 is one of the newest electric products to hit the market. Its range is estimated at over 400 km with the two-wheel drive model. What you need to know about this small SUV is that it’s a lot of fun to drive. Indeed, a pleasant surprise. On the other hand, every conceivable control is on-screen, making the onboard experience anything but user-friendly. See where your tolerance level is with technology before moving forward.
10- Volkswagen ID.Buzz
Finally, how can we not include the Volkswagen ID.Buzz in our top ten? This minivan, launched last fall, is a modern version of the legendary Type 2 from the 60s and is simply irresistible. The colour palette takes you back in time. The customization options are still sparse, but we are getting there with more aftermarket stuff being offered. The snag is the price, which is way too steep. Cheaper versions will be available next year.
A variety of choices
The growing interest in foreign electric vehicles reflects a consumer trend where buyers are looking to diversify their options and move away from American products. Whether for economic or political reasons, or simply for a taste of the new, a number of models stand out for their design, range and energy efficiency.
Brands such as Nissan, Hyundai, BMW and Volvo offer attractive alternatives that meet the varied needs of Canadian drivers. Before making a choice, however, it’s essential to carefully analyze the origin of the parts and the assembly of these vehicles, as a foreign model can sometimes contain more American components than you might think.
Ultimately, this growing diversity of electric vehicles is great news for consumers, offering them a wider range of sustainable and innovative options. Whether you’re looking for a roomy SUV, a sporty sedan or an iconic model like the ID.Buzz, chances are you’ll find the ideal electric vehicle for your needs. And don’t forget, whatever your choice, BEQ Technology has the solution for all your recharging needs!
